This October, Genea Biocells attended the 14th annual Inter-university Institute of Myology (IIM) congress held in historic Assisi, Italy. The meeting was a gathering of predominantly Italian researchers studying the pathogenesis and therapeutic approaches to various neuromuscular diseases. During the span of the conference, excellent presentations covering muscle development, signaling and homeostasis in both healthy and disease conditions were given. Genea’s president, Dr. Uli Schmidt, gave a lecture entitled “An in vitro model of FSHD based on human stem cell-derived skeletal myotubes and its application in drug discovery” and Dr. Jamshid Arjomand, presented a collaborative poster entitled “2D and 3D disease modeling of Becker and Duchenne’s muscular dystrophies”. The meeting provided an excellent opportunity to interact with the Italian academic community, learn about their latest research related to myology and indulge in the breathtaking views of the countryside and the wonderful meals being served.
